We have started learning the rotations for the Daily 5. These rotations are things that teachers always do, and we know they're important. The problem is that when students should be reading to themselves, they're usually not. From my past experience, slightly over half of my students would actually be reading, enjoying, and focusing on their book during silent reading.
I feel like TEACHING the students to do those things and be accountable has helped so much this year. We are on day 11 of practicing reading to ourselves. We read quietly, around the room, and the students are so into their books! Some are even upset when I call them back together for a meeting. It's so cool to see and be a part of. We've been building or reading stamina and the students just read for 22 minutes. I stopped them because of time, otherwise, I think they could have kept going.
"Working on Writing" is a little different. It's much harder for the students to be focused and engaged without "breaking their stamina" while they write. We are making gains everyday though.
We are beginning to learn and practice "Read to Someone". With this, the students will practice reading to a classmate and discussing what they've read.
The Daily 5 involved a lot of student choice to help motivate them. Reading and writing are much more engaging and authentic if you are getting to read and write what you want!
I'm excited to see how the Daily 5 can create a love of reading in the students!
