The Daily 5
This year, we are going to begin using the Daily 5 as a way to structure our reading block. The Daily 5™ is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently. Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring (Boushey, G., & Moser, J., 2014). We have been training the students to do the rotations of Read to Self and Work on Writing independently. This means the students are focused on their task and building their stamina, or the length of time they are focused on the task. Soon, we will introduce the other three rotations: Word Work, Read to Someone, and Listen to Reading. THRIVE Reading Program Our new reading program is completely digital. This is very exciting, but brings up new requirements, like usernames and passwords. We are using a combination of the Daily 5 structure with the THRIVE materials. In order to access THRIVE at home, you will need to do the following: 1. You will need to have internet access, and the browser you use must be Google Chrome. You cannot use Internet Explorer, Safari, etc. 2. Go to www.usd115.timetoknow.com 3. The student knows their username and password. 4. Check the assignment book for the specific lesson. (Accessing THRIVE at home will only be used in case of absence.) |
